APSA 2016 Annual Meeting & APSA-IPSO Symposium – San Diego, CA
APSA-IPSO Symposium, May 14-15, 2016
APSA 2016 Annual Meeting, May 15-17, 2016
Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego
San Diego, CA USA
Our time in San Diego started off with strong educational content during the APSA-IPSO Symposium. Attendees were updated on current topics in pediatric surgical oncology through abstracts, posters and a spectacular and challenging cases session.
APSA 2016 hit another attendance record with 871 delegates from 28 countries. In addition to a robust line-up of educational, scientific, poster, innovation and video sessions, it was the first time the meeting was held in a urban location, the first time for concurrent sessions, the first Health Policy Scholar Update and the first time the meeting ended with the President's Banquet (and the first time the New Member Ceremony opened with a live bugler!)
APSA was honored to recognize the achievements of two luminaries in the pediatric surgery field with the Distinguished Service Award and the Robert E. Gross Award for Excellence. Patricia K. Donahoe, MD, was the eighth person ever to receive the Distinguished Service Award, APSA's highest honor. She was recognized not only for her research on the Mullerian Inhibiting Substance as a potential anticancer agent against human ovarian carcinomas, but also for creating APSA's first strategic plan during her presidency (2006-2007). Michael R. Harrison, MD, received the Gross Award in honor of his pioneering work in fetal surgery and intervention. He also developed many of the fetal, pediatric and obstetrical devices required to make those interventions possible and performed the first human open fetal procedure.
